Wyoming professionals get involved with THS’s ‘Red Ribbon Week’

A special week of straightforward talk and enrichment activities at Torrington High School will conclude this evening with a free late night viewing of the movie, “Radio,” exclusively for THS students.
For the fourth year “Red Ribbon Week” has brought students and community members together with the intention of informing and encouraging Torrington, Wyoming teens to make responsible choices that are in favor of abstaining from the use of alcohol and drugs.
The event is organized and sponsored by the members of Torrington, Wyoming National Honor Society and the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program through the Torrington, Wyoming Police Department.
The week’s activities began with information and question sessions on Monday and Thursday from various knowledgeable community members regarding the many issues of underage alcohol and illegal drug use. Each grade level addressed different topics from the county’s professionals.
Wyoming students in the ninth grade listened to local Wyoming attorneys, Patrick Korell, Greg Knudsen and James Eddington speaking candidly about the perils of alcohol and drug abuse and the specific legal processes that underage users experience in juvenile court along with their lifelong consequences. They emphasized how an individual’s judgment and choices are adversely affected when under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
Tenth-graders were informed of specific problems of underage alcohol and drug abuse in Goshen County, Wyoming by Torrington, Wyoming Police Chief Billy Janes and officers Jeff Lamm and Larry Curtis.
Juniors learned of the consequences to auto, health and life insurance coverage and premiums from agents Lori Schaeffer, Mike Rafferty and Chuck Curry. Many students were surprised to learn of the difficulties and increased expenses of securing insurance once an individual has obtained a police record of driving under the influence and documented use of alcohol and drugs.
Seniors discussed how underage alcohol and drug usage can affect their entire life once even an individual incident is entered on their permanent legal record with local judges Randal Arp, Keith Kautz and Chuck Lowery. They explained how the belief that any offense committed under the age of 18 is often suspended. The decision to use alcohol and drugs is a serious offense and many times entered to an individual’s permanent adult record regardless of age.
Enrichment activities included root beer floats for the entire student body served and supplied by the members of the National Honor Society on Tuesday, and this evening will conclude the weeks events with a free viewing of the Cuba Gooding Jr. movie, “Radio” at 11:15 p.m. at the Wyoming Theater, furnished by the DARE program.
“The idea is to demonstrate and provide positive socializing alternatives to partying for the kids,” explained THS guidance counselor Carla Sturgeon.
Student reactions to “Red Ribbon Week” are mixed, if not cautious. Responses to the weeks activities ranged from 10th-grader Casie Spurgin who said, “People are going to break the law just to show they can,” to senior, Dana Kisiel who believes, “The information was good, but I don’t know if it will make a difference.”
“We would like to be able to continue holding the event yearly,” Sturgeon said. “But, it depends upon it’s success.”
