Investigation of child’s drug overdose continues in Wyoming

An overdose of methamphetamines by a 2-year-old Torrington, Wyoming girl remains under investigation by the Torrington Police Department and the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation following a response to a call from Community Hospital at the end of June. Torrington Police Chief Billy Janes said the department was contacted on the evening of June 29-30.
“We responded to the hospital with a call on this child, who was acting extremely confused and hyperactive,” Janes said. “When tests were run, it was confirmed to be a methamphetamine overdose.”

The mother has been interviewed, but the mother’s boyfriend refused to be interviewed. “We’re basically working on trying to figure out what location the drugs were ingested at,” Janes said. “The mother said she went over to Scottsbluff (Neb.) late Sunday night and went to a friend’s house. On the way back, that’s when the baby started acting up.”

An officer from the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation interviewed some of the residents in the Scottsbluff neighborhood. They all said that there was no opportunity for the girl to ingest methamphetamine while she was with her mother at the Scottsbluff residence.

The officer said the girl was thrashing around and repetitively calling, “Mommy, mommy, mommy ...” It also took several staff members at the hospital to physically restrain the girl in order to administer medications to offset the effects of the methamphetamine overdose.

“We do have a confirmation of drug use by the adults involved,” Janes said. “They admit to being users of methamphetamines and marijuana. He noted that methamphetamines are easy to produce in clandestine labs. “We currently have everything to the county attorney and we’re waiting to hear what the possible charges may be,” he said. “This is a very serious incident.”

Janes explained that this was not the first incident involving illegal drug ingestion by the child, but it is the first report to be received by the Torrington Police Department. The mother also has a 5-year-old daughter. Since the incident, both girls have been placed in foster care by the Goshen County Department of Family Services. “In my years of law enforcement, this is the one that aggravates me the most,” Janes said.
