Demerol Effects

Demerol is a narcotic analgesic with many actions similar to morphine. The general therapeutic effects of Demerol are analgesia and sedation. Demerol is used to relieve moderate to severe pain, as a preoperative medication, and the support of anesthesia and for obstetrical analgesia. The effects of Demerol are felt 10-15 minutes after ingestion and last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. Demerol slows brain activity and intensifies the effects of alcohol. Individuals are warned not to drink alcohol while taking this medication.

If Demerol is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Do not take Demerol if you are taking any of the medications listed below:

Antidepressant drugs such as Elavil, Tofranil
Antihistamines such as Benadryl
Cimetidine (Tagamet)
Major tranquilizers such as Mellaril and Thorazine
MAO inhibitors such as the antidepressant drugs Nardil and Parnate
Other narcotic painkillers such as Percocet and Tylenol with Codeine
Phenytoin (Dilantin)
Sedatives such as Halcion and Restoril
Tranquilizers such as Xanax and Valium
